Elayne Humphrey Presents: Power Struggles in the Cockpit - What CFIs Need to Know
In the world of aviation, flight instructors play a pivotal role in training aspiring pilots. They impart knowledge, instill skills, and foster confidence in their students. However, there may arise rare instances when an instructor must exercise their authority and physically overpower a student to ensure the safety of everyone on board.
This presentation will give a personal and general experience of the circumstances and methods in which an instructor might need to take control and save lives during a flight.
"Power Struggles in the Cockpit - What CFIs Need to Know"
CAPE FEAR Aviation - Gray's Creek Airport was founded in 1984 by Dale Smith when he began dusting crops in and around the local area. The airport originally consisted of a dirt strip that was less than 2,000 feet long, but in 1987 power lines on the north side of the runway were moved further north and the runway length was extended to 3,500 feet.
Alongside his crop dusting operation, Dale bought a Cessna 150 and began a small flight instructing operation based at the airport.
ELANY HUMPHREY - Master Certificated Flight Instructor
My love of aviation started as a teen when I was inspired to become an astronaut after seeing the movie The Right Stuff. I graduated with a Bachelor’s in Marketing from Virginia Tech and went on to earn a Master’s in Marketing Research from the University of Texas at Arlington. I got married, raised two kids, had my own website design business and was a homeschool mom and teacher, never giving up the hope that one day I would be able to fly.
After my first flight lesson on May 2nd, 2018, I knew I had found the life path I was longing for – combining my passion to teach and my desire to fly. In the past 5 years I have gotten my CFI, CFII, MEI and am Multi-Engine and Seaplane rated.
My short career so far as an instructor has been filled with learning, excitement, challenges and heart-ache. I feel like I’ve experienced so much in just a short amount of time – being overpowered by a student, watching a friend go down in a plane crash, helping over 50 people get their certificates/rating, hiring CFIs, “firing” students, and one of my favorite activities – teaching CFIs in Alaska. As an instructor, my goal is to inspire others to know that they can do “it” – whatever “it” is for them. I encourage people to dream big and never give up.
In my spare time, I enjoy reading about and watching aviation-related or instructor-related videos and challenging myself to learn new techniques and new knowledge to make me a better pilot, instructor and mentor. As a full-time CFI, I am honest, fair, hard-working, detail-oriented, passionate, knowledgeable and constantly learning.
