BRUCE RAY Presents:
Instructor of Educator What is the Difference?
Instructing instructors has more immediate yet long-term significance in aviation than in many other professions. But we are frequently using pilots instead of educators* in this situation. Although there are many disparate piecemeal attempts to apply educator techniques to instructing, I still do not know after 34 years what parts of the FAA’s FOI I can effectively apply.
The Fundamentals Of Instruction is well covered by the FAA, NAFI, SAFE, FAA, EAA, AOPA but applying more subtle teaching techniques from professional educators seems to be frustratingly missing.
AVIATION INSTRUCTORS HANDBOOK
Designed for ground instructors, flight instructors, and aviation maintenance instructors, the Aviation Instructor’s Handbook was developed by the Flight Standards Service, Airman Testing Standards Branch, in cooperation with aviation educators and industry to help beginning instructors understand and apply the fundamentals of instruction. This handbook provides aviation instructors with up- to-date information on learning and teaching, and how to relate this information to the task of teaching aeronautical knowledge and skills to learners. Experienced aviation instructors will also find the updated information useful for improving their effectiveness in training activities.

BRUCE RAY
Bruce started his computer company, Wild Hare Computer Systems, over 50 years ago – the same year that he took his first flying lesson. He has been a contributing author to computer industry magazines, an technology instructor, and a solution provider to commercial and military computer clients worldwide.
Although ATP rated, he considers the CFI certificate the most important FAA certificate. It combines the challenges of the aviation and education fields, and has the most wide-ranging long-range effects – especially on safety.
He has seen tremendous technical advances in aviation over the decades, but unfortunately without a corresponding effectiveness in flight training. Adopting more tools and techniques from the educational field may be one option to enhance CFI effectiveness. This presentation will explore some of these educational strategies that will benefit CFIs and learners.
